Merchant Spotlight: Duncan Stewart Textiles

Jun 16, 2026

Some businesses come and go. Others quietly build something that lasts for generations.

Duncan Stewart Textiles is firmly in the second camp.

Founded back in 1978 by Duncan himself, this family-run business has been crafting beautifully personalised textiles for nearly five decades. From cosy sherpa-lined hoodies and luxurious bathrobes to embroidered towels, weekend bags, and everything in between, every single piece is personalised in-house — something that's become increasingly rare in a world of outsourced everything.

Run today by Fraser Stewart, it's a business built on quality, craftsmanship, and the kind of personal touch you only get when something is made with real care. Exactly the kind of independent maker we love to champion at needi.

What inspired you to start your business?

Duncan Stewart Textiles Ltd was founded in 1978 by my father after he was made redundant from a textile firm he had worked for for 25 years. Rather than step away from the industry he knew so well, he decided to set up his own business and build something of his own.

As the company began to grow, I joined the business in 1983, initially working from home. What started as a small family venture quickly became a long-term commitment, and I've never looked back.

What's the biggest lesson you've learnt so far on your journey?

The biggest lesson I've learnt is the importance of trusting your staff and delegating properly. You can't do everything yourself.

Focusing on what you do best and allowing your team to use their own skills makes the business stronger and more efficient. Building trust with the people you employ is essential for long-term growth.

What makes your business special?

What makes our business special is that we remain a small family-run company with all product personalisation carried out in-house.

This gives us greater control over quality and turnaround times, and sets us apart from competitors who outsource this work.

What's your favourite product and why?

My favourite product is our Nu Hide Weekend Bag. It's a high-quality, practical piece that I use regularly for short breaks, which says a lot about how much I trust the product.

I also have a real soft spot for our sherpa-lined hoodies. They're incredibly cosy in the winter and surprisingly useful during cooler summer evenings, especially for barbecues.

What's the top piece of advice you would give to fellow small business owners?

My top piece of advice would be to learn when to step back and switch off.

Working around the clock isn't sustainable, and time away from the business is essential for both wellbeing and clear decision-making. Everyone needs space to recharge in order to perform at their best.

What's the most memorable gift you've ever received?

One of the most memorable gifts I've received was a birthday surprise from my wife a couple of years ago. Tickets for me and the children to attend a Faulty Towers dining experience in London.

It was a brilliantly chaotic and entertaining evening, made even more special with a family weekend in London as part of the trip.

If you're looking for gifts that feel genuinely personal, made by people who actually care about the craft, Duncan Stewart Textiles is exactly the kind of merchant worth shouting about.

From personalised bathrobes and bridal gifts to sherpa hoodies, towel sets, weekend bags, and pet blankets, there's something thoughtful here for every occasion.
