Meet the Merchant: The Little Botanical
Some gifts do more than sit on a shelf. They brighten a room, lift a mood and quietly make a space feel calmer.
That’s exactly what The Little Botanical set out to do. What began as a simple idea to make beautiful houseplants easier for everyone to enjoy has grown into a brand helping people bring a little more green into their homes and workspaces.

We caught up with Morag Hill from The Little Botanical to hear how a passion for plants turned into a business built around simplicity, style and wellbeing.
Business: The Little Botanical
Founder: Hill Brothers
Location: South-East England
What inspired you to start your business?
We were inspired to start The Little Botanical because we wanted to make beautiful, easy-care indoor plants accessible to everyone.
After years in horticulture, we noticed a wonderful opportunity. Many beautiful plants could look even better with the right styling and care. We realised that with a little support and the right pot, anyone could enjoy the full impact of greenery in their home.
Plants have an incredible ability to transform a space, and we saw how excited people became when they felt confident choosing, styling and caring for them. That opportunity inspired us to create The Little Botanical.
So in 2017, we set out to create a complete, low-maintenance, beautifully styled plant solution that arrived ready to enjoy. Our goal was to help people bring more green style into their homes, reduce stress, improve air quality and make interior spaces feel happier and calmer.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far on your journey?
One of the biggest lessons we have learnt is that simplicity is powerful.
From the beginning, we believed people wanted beautiful plants without the hassle, and our journey has continually reinforced that. Customers value clarity, ease and confidence when bringing plants into their homes.
We have also learnt the importance of staying true to our mission. As we have grown, it has been tempting to expand in many directions, but the biggest successes have come when we focus on what we do best: high-quality, low-maintenance plants styled in perfectly fitting pots and delivered with care.

What makes your business special?
What makes The Little Botanical special is the complete experience we offer. We provide more than plants. Our beautifully styled, low-maintenance houseplants arrive ready to enjoy in perfectly fitting premium pots, making it simple and enjoyable for customers to bring greenery into their homes.
Most of our houseplants are grown and cared for at our own family-run nursery in south-east England, where each plant is nurtured with real expertise before it reaches a new home. We grow in peat-free compost too, supporting more sustainable plant care.
We also pride ourselves on offering a truly bespoke and personal service. Whether someone is styling their home, refreshing an office space or searching for thoughtful corporate gifts, we love helping them find the perfect green addition. Our personalised touches, including engraved pots or branded gifting, allow us to create something unique and memorable.

What’s your favourite product and why?
Our favourite product has to be our signature succulents in their perfectly fitting ceramic pots.
They capture everything The Little Botanical stands for: simple care, beautiful styling and effortless greenery for any space. Succulents are ideal for busy people because they need very little attention, yet they add so much character to a room.
We also love how versatile they are. Whether you place one on a desk, group a few together for a styled shelf, or gift them to someone new to plants, they always bring a little lift to an interior. They were one of the first products we launched, and they continue to represent the heart of our brand.

What’s the top piece of advice you would give to fellow small business owners?
Stay true to your core mission and let it guide every decision you make.
There will always be new ideas, trends and opportunities that can pull you in different directions, but when you stay focused on what you do best, your brand becomes stronger, and your customers feel that clarity.
Another important lesson is to take things one step at a time. Building a business can feel overwhelming, but steady progress, consistent quality and genuine customer care make a huge difference over the long term.

What’s the most memorable gift you’ve ever received?
While a beautifully wrapped present is always magical to open, the gifts that stay with me most now are experiences.
Anything that takes me out of work mode and gives me space to reset, like concert tickets, a comedy night or an evening at the theatre, has become my idea of the perfect gift.
